 Victoria Memorial:
‘Victoria memorial’ a splendid architectural structure was built in the memory of Queen Victoria. It was built in white marble in the early 20th century, and was inaugurated by the Prince of Wales in the year 1921 who later on became the King Edward VIII of England. The bronze statue of the queen near the entrance, brass canons, wrought iron street lamps, manicured lawns, gardens and pathways, the lighting effects in the evening and the 'Fountain of Joy' facing the memorial creates an ambience of sheer bliss.
Indian Museum:
The Indian museum was set up in 1878 on the Jawaharlal Nehru Road. It is built in an Italian architectural style and is the largest museum in India and one of the best in Asia. The museum consists of six sections: Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Industry. The museum houses a collection of meteorites, unique fossils of prehistoric animals which includes a giant crocodile and a huge tortoise. The art collection consists of Gandharan art.
Botanical gardens:
The Botanical Gardens was founded in 1787 by the East India Company. Many plants were collected from various countries for the introduction and acclimatization of plants from the foreign countries. This 273 acre garden consists of a banyan tree which is the world's largest having a circumference of 330m. One can find rows of mahogany trees, an avenue of Royal Cuban palms and an Orchid House in the garden. These gardens are considered to be the biggest in Asia and the second largest in the world.
Kali temple:
The temple is located in the city of Calcutta on the banks of the Hooghly river. The Kali temple or the Kalighat temple in its present form is nearly about 200 years old. ‘Kaali’ is the goddess regarded as the destroyer or the liberator and is depicted in a fearful form. Despite her fierce form, she is considered to deliver bliss to her worshippers.
